Appalachian Trail - North Carolina

My name is Guy M. Hays and I live in Wake Forest, NC with my loving wife Nancy Owen. I am a realtor with Fonville Morisey Realty, and I have let my office manager know that I am going out on the trail. If it means anything to this story I have served in the U.S Coast Guard and the Maryland National Guard (Army) as an enlisted man.

I am doing this hike to raise money for the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF). My nephew, Timothy Gavallas, has multiple myeloma, and the foundation has given him spiritual support and a network of friends that have helped he and his family face their battle with myeloma.

Last fall I got the name 'Uncle Turtle' when I hiked a portion of the Long Trail with Timothy. When my foot slipped off a rock in the middle of a muddy area on the trail, I tried to pull myself out. But my foot popped out of my shoe and I went over on my back. With my legs and arms flailing around, Tim said that I "turtled". That's when I started calling myself Turtle. I went from Uncle Guy, to Uncle Turtle and began introducing myself as Uncle Turtle to the other hikers. I am not a fast hiker, but I hope to get better as I hike the A.T.

Two weeks ago, I did a 35-mile training hike on the Appalachian Trail near Hot Springs, NC. I plan to do another 30-mile hike in two weeks. Since I am doing these hikes on the Trail in the same year, I will include them in my overall hike total. I will continue to do more until I begin what is called a Flip-Flop hike. A Flip-Flop hike is when you hike from a selected point in the trail to one terminus, and then come back to that point to hike to the other terminus of the trial.
