Hikers Heading

We are sponsoring this 5K Walk/Run in honor of Jim Schleicher, who is fighting against a difficult cancer known as multiple myeloma. He has been battling this cancer since 2012 when he was diagnosed after a routine physical. Jim is a supporter of the MA &PA Trail Association and is a frequent user of the bike trail. He is one of the strongest people around, and is truly a valiant warrior against multiple myeloma!

Jim’s myeloma cancer gene is apparently very aggressive since the beast broke through two stem cell transplants -- the first with his own stem cells and, a year and a half later, with stem cells donated by his son Jimmy. Currently Jim is awaiting acceptance into a clinical drug trial and, in the interim, is being treated with bridge chemotherapy and radiation.

With dignity and fortitude, Jim continues to wage this war throughout his difficult ordeal. With the enthusiastic support of his family and friends, he (and we) remain committed to raising funds for multiple myeloma research until a cure is found. With thanks in advance, the Schleicher Family and the IMF appreciate your help in supporting this endeavor!

About Multiple Myeloma and the IMF:

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow plasma cells. Plasma cells make antibodies against infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria. A cancerous or malignant plasma cell is called a myeloma cell. Myeloma is called "multiple" because there are frequently multiple patches or areas in bone marrow where it grows. The most common symptoms of myeloma are back or bone pain, unexplained fatigue, and recurrent or persistent infections. Myeloma is treatable and outcomes continue to improve.

Founded in 1990, the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is the first and largest organization focusing specifically on multiple myeloma. The IMF's reach extends to more than 525,000 members in 140 countries worldwide. The IMF is dedicated to improving the quality of life of myeloma patients while working toward prevention and a cure through four founding principles: Research, Education, Support, and Advocacy.

The IMF is dedicated to raising community awareness, funding critical research and providing programs locally and nationally for patients and caregivers. The International Myeloma Foundation is a non-profit public corporation, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3)organization in the State of California.
